Performance:

The BMW X3 and Audi Q5 are true competitors in the performance category. Both brands offer sporty trim levels that are worth researching if performance is a major consideration, but for this comparison, the basic specs of both SAVs will be considered. Do you remember the old adage, “great minds think alike”? That statement rings true about the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5… Both deliver the same 248 HP from a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine, hit a six second 0-60, and have almost identical combined fuel economy (BMW is 2 combined MPG better). On paper these vehicles are identical, which is why you need to actually drive them before making a decision — a decision we are confident will begin with an “X” and end with a “3”, due to the BMW X3’s superior handling and dynamic driver technology.

Practicality:

BMW understands that their clients are practical people, who don’t waste time, who get to the point, and who have high standards. The BMW X3 is an SAV tailor-made for the practical consumer. Audi targets the same clients, but unfortunately, their product fails to match the Ultimate Driving Machine. The BMW X3 gets 2 combined MPG better than the Audi Q5. Admittedly the gas mileage difference is not huge, but definitely more noticeable during long rides. The BMW X3 rises above due to a significantly larger trunk and a highly intuitive touchscreen infotainment system. Conversely, Audi’s trunk will come up short when you need it most and the infotainment system is not a touchscreen, so a rocket science PhD from MIT may be necessary to operate it. All jokes aside, both are great options, but the BMW X3 is the better buy.
