Performance:

If there is one vehicle in the SAV segment that gives the BMW a run for its money, it’s the Porsche Macan. Porsche introduced the Macan back in 2014, and just 4 years later, the SAV makes up over 40% of their sales. Porsche does offer some excellent high performance trims (Turbo and GTS) for their Macon that are worth exploring if you are comfortable with spending close to six figures on an SAV. At their most basic trim levels, the BMW is the better performer. Both vehicles offer the same 248 horsepower, but the BMW X3 can accelerate from 0-60 a significant 0.3 seconds faster. Additionally, the Porsche Macon only has a 7-speed transmission, while the BMW X3 comes standard with an 8-speed automatic gearbox–giving it longer legs on the highway and better fuel economy. So if you aren’t planning to shell out the cash for a top trim level Macan, the BMW X3 is actually the better choice in the performance category.

Practicality:

The first distinction that needs to be made between the BMW X3 and the Porsche Macan is the price. The Macan costs $8,900 more than the X3, and to add insult to injury, its options are more expensive. For example a panoramic moonroof on the BMW X3 costs $1,350, while the same option on the Porsche Macan will run $1,670. The next area where the Macan can not measure up is in trunk space. The X3 offers a spacious 28.7 cubic feet of trunk space, while the Macon only offers 17.6 cubic feet — about the amount space you’d expect to find in a sedan… Finally, the X3 features much better fuel economy, which saves you money. So while the Porsche Macan is a great car, it’s difficult to justify the extra cost as compared to the more practical BMW X3.
