As the newer models of BMWs include more intuitive technology, they’re able to communicate advanced information regarding your BMW’s status and preemptive warnings about service needs.

Below you will find information on the additional indicator and warning lights. As BMW dashboard symbols illuminate, you will notice various colors that communicate the priority level of the warning. The meaning and priority of the colors in BMW dashboard warning lights are listed below:

  • Red – Communicates a warning that requires immediate attention.
  • Orange and Yellow – Designates a warning that is not critical but requires attention as soon as possible.
  • Blue and Green – Indicates the BMW has features or technology that is currently active.

Reminder Indicators



Front fog lamp is on.




Reminder to press the brake pedal for starting the engine.



Weather indicator icon.




These lights indicate the defrost function of the windshield and/or the defogger on the rear window are active.



This indicator appears if you change a lane without a turn signal.




Indicates cruise control is active.




Warning light indicating one of the BMW doors are open.




This light communicates the key is not in the BMW during an attempt to start.




The gas gauge is not connected.




Communicates when your BMW is in traction control.



Warning Indicators


Indicates that BMW lights are malfunctioning, including parking, brake, rear fog, signal, interior or license plate lamps.



Warns of a malfunction in the headlight control system.



O/D OFF warning light means the drive system is turned off.



This indicator communicates a traction control or a communication issue between the modules.




Catalytic Converter Warning light is due to a faulty system.




Indicates that the water level in the fuel filter has increased.



These lights mean the vehicle engine fuel filter is dirty or faulty.




This indicator means the fuel has decreased.




Communicates a decrease in engine power.




Indicates the brake pads are worn.



Communicates a faulty transmission.




This symbol means the engine is operating at an improper temperature,which usually means it is necessary to check the oil and engine coolant level.



Warning that your BMW is exceeding the speed limit.




Indicates the airbag and seat belt system is defective.




ABS warning light.




Warns there is an issue with your BMW’s traction control.
